Ionic and Covalent Bonding Introduction This topic covers a number of iisues relevant to bonding, namely, classifying binary compounds as ionic or covalent based on the position of their constituent elements in the Periodic Table, naming binary compounds and deducing the dot and cross diagrams for ionic and covalent compounds.
Covalent bonds form when two or more nonmetals combine. For example, both hydrogen and oxygen are nonmetals, and when they combine to make water, they do so by forming covalent bonds. Nonmetal atoms in polyatomic ions are joined by covalent bonds, but the ion as a whole participates in ionic bonding.
